Founded at the site of a historic saltwater farm – Laudholm Farm – the Wells Reserve has grown to 2250 acres that have become a haven for those seeking the beauty of natural coastal landscapes. The Wells Reserve is also a center of activity focused on research, education, stewardship of the land and water and historic preservation. The Laudholm Trust provides valuable support for all Wells Reserve programs. Children and adults come here to learn the value of conservation and preservation. Our scientists are here to search for new ways to ensure a healthy coastal ecosystem (right down to clean drinking water for you). Visitors come here to enjoy spectacular vistas or to gather in beautifully preserved farm buildings.

Your support helps make all this possible. Every dollar you give to the Laudholm Trust helps ensure we’re here now and in the future. There are paths to maintain, programs to fund and historic buildings to preserve. We can’t do it alone. We need you. Please give your support so that tomorrow you can once again step back in time, walk our quiet paths, marvel at a soaring barn loft, enjoy the fresh saltwater air and share stunning views that take your breath away.

At the center of the Wells Reserve high on a hill, sits historic Laudholm Farm, the heart of the Wells Reserve and home to the Laudholm Trust, which serves as the fundraising and community outreach organization responsible for ensuring the preservation of the Reserve and the success of its programs. The farm, which was given the name “Laudholm” by owner Charles E. Lord in the early 20th century, was settled in 1642 and was occupied by just four families over the next 350 years. “Laud” means to praise and “holm” means meadow or inland island. The name works as a delightful play on words for its owner at the time, meaning “Lord Home.”

For many years the farm was known far and wide as a prosperous and progressive enterprise, raising guernsey cows and distributing Laudholm Farms products such as milk, butter and eggs.

The Laudholm Trust
In 1969, the farm’s last private owner sold 199 acres, including Laudholm Beach, to the Maine Department of Conservation. When developers later sought to purchase the remaining 250 acres, neighbors banded together to preserve the site and its historic buildings.

They formed the Laudholm Trust and reached out to individuals, businesses and foundations for support. Agreements were negotiated to combine the farm property with adjacent town, state and federal lands. The work of hundreds of committed individuals resulted in the dedication of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, or Wells Reserve, in 1986.

This multi-award winning Portland based songwriter discovered his father’s collection of eight-track tapes as a child and never looked back. After early exposure to songwriter legends like Neil Young, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Van Morrison along with Motown heavies like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, Jason was inspired to start making the rounds on coffee house stages in his teens. The maturity and strength of his impressive debut album “Lost Houses” (2003) quickly began to turn the heads of fans and critics alike. Within a few months of the release, he added a blistering rhythm section (Adam Frederick and Reed Chambers) to the supporting cast. If Jason’s debut hinted at the potential of a unique new artist, his stunning sophomore release “The Flame You Follow” expelled any doubt and cemented Jason and the band as one of the “bright light” acts on the scene today. Jason and the trio have just returned from a very successful showing at the 2009 South By Southwest festival is Austin, TX. Jason won “Best Folk Artist” in the Portland Phoenix’s annual Best Music Poll for 2009. Jason also won the International finals of the Mountain Stage NewSong contest held in New York City and he was honored as a national finalist in the Starbucks Music Makers competition in Boston. Previously, he won the Ossipee (NH) Valley Bluegrass Festival songwriting contest and was a finalist in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Other highlights include Jason’s song “Pickup Truck” airing on NPR’s “Car Talk” Program and a national appearance on The Food Network’s “FoodNation with Bobby Flay.”

Since forming in 2003, when the drum and bass combo of Nate Cyr and Chuck Gagne began backing singer/songwriter Dominic Lavoie, Dominic and The Lucid have been racking up yearly awards and critical acclaim. Originally from northern Maine (the blue collar, paper mill, potato picking area of the St. John Valley) they have released two full length CDs, “Waging The Wage” (2006) and “Seasons Of The Sun” (2008). “Wage” was voted runner-up by Portland Phoenix readers as “Best Record” in the 2007 Best Music Poll. Dominic also won the “Best Male Vocalist” award for both the 2007 and 2009 Best Music Polls. The band has continued to tour extensively throughout New England (and beyond) and has received regular airplay on WBLM, WCYY and WCLZ.

For a guy who keeps such a low profile (he does not have a web site and he does not own a cell phone), Steve Jones is well known as one of Maine’s best known band leaders and musicians, and throughout his 20+ year career, he has played with practically everyone on the Maine music scene. In addition to fronting his own band, he still plays guitar and sings in The Boneheads, one of Northern New England’s’s most beloved roots-rock bands. He has been called Maine’s most in-demand session guitarist and he is a producer and arranger on many local CDs released each year. He has played with The Coming Grass, Cindy Bullens, and Sara Cox (to name a few) and he recently composed original music for a series of TV and radio ads for Bangor Savings Bank. The Steve Jones Band includes members of Strangefolk, The Coming Grass and Diesel Doug and The Long Haul Truckers. He has released two full length original CDs in the last 10 years, 1999’s “Stephen Jones” and 2003’s “It Is What It Is And It Does What It Does” and he is preparing another release of all new material for fall 2009.
